Baikal ij27e forestock removing4/8/2023 This gun could also be an exhibition piece made for some trade fair and sold - or given to a dealer as sample - there, or exported by an individual. Higher grades of Soviet shotguns were offered by German catalogues, and perhaps in other European countries as well. The tight chokes seem to suit my style of shooting so they can stay just as they are. I see no reason to alter the gun in any way now, apart from successfully removing the auto safety. The chamber will be 70 mm (2 3/4'), and this gun was not made for steel. I've been using the Baikal for the past few weeks and managed to shoot 1 fox,4 rabbits and 135 pigeons over stubble fields. Examination of proof marks may clear some light on it as well. 5 mm (M) below, and 1.0 mm (F) above, but on custom guns there could be variations. Could you remove fore-end and barrels and make pictures of the markings on them? In your case, I can't give a more precise estimate, because the date code in the serial No would refer only to when the action was filed - after that it was handed over to the custom gun department, where it could stay for years before it would be completed. MFG date can't be earlier than 1978, the year single triggers were introduced. Congratulations! Enjoy your gun, it's a very high grade and from 'better' years.
